Tax software offers last-minute solutions

TurboTax, TaxCut each has strong suits and can save in a pinch

By Sandra Block / USA Today

It’s probably too late to schedule an appointment with an accountant to do your taxes. But tax software still can help you do the job if you’re rushing to complete your taxes by Tuesday’s deadline.

Besides, with tax software, you can prepare your own return for around $50, less than half what accountants charge on average for federal and state returns without itemized deductions. Taxpayers with adjusted gross income of $54,000 or less can prepare and electronically file their federal returns for free via the Internal Revenue Service Free File program.
